![]() ![]() Might be easier just to source a replacement optical drive for the iMac. There's probably weirder ways to do this. Choose Finder then select Go from the menu bar. If you want to go full insane, then you can remove the HDD from the Mac, and plug it into another Mac (or probably also Windows or Linux with the right pieces), and either install it there OR partition the drive and "restore" the install CD/DVD onto one of the partitions (basically a dd). Connect the USB flash drive to the computer you wish to install macOS. It is also very slow since you are limited to Full Speed USB of 12Mbps, compared to 400Mbps of Firewire. It is also possible to install from USB, but you need to do from openfirmware. You can also put this into target disk mode, and install onto the drive from another computer.Īnother option is NetInstall (or even NetBoot, but that's an extra step of mild crazy), which is most easily done using OS X Server, but you can set up the necessary bits without it. This vintage, you can boot from firewire devices (CD/DVD, HDD, SSD etc) from the early boot screen (hold down option).
